The Importance of Bread
Not so long ago an Englisch journalist did a revealing test: He bought a three-pound loaf and with it went and stood at busy street corners of various cities. He invited the passers-by to work one hour for this loaf of bread. His results:
In Hamburg he was laughed at. In New York he was arrested by the police.
In African Nigeria several people were willing to work three hours for this loaf.
In Indian New Delhi several hundred people soon flocked to work willingly for this loaf for a whole day ...
The Disrespected Loaf
A rich, proud farmer’s daughter of Sandbach in Upper Palatinate Forest went home with both her brothers from the dance hall. Then the three of them were caught in a hard rain. On their way there was a large puddle of water. The vain girl could not make up her mind to walk through it, for she felt very sorry for the beautiful dancing shoes she was wearing. If only there was a large stone in the middle of the puddle, on which she could tread dry-shod! Yet she did not think twice! She still had with her a big bread roll from the party. She threw it into the puddle as if it were merely a stone and trod on it.
